MELVINDALE – The man suspected in the Feb. 13 shooting death at Play Atlantis turned himself into authorities in Oxford, Ala., last night.
Lamar Alexander Carter, 23, reportedly went to a Quiznoes restaurant and asked an employee to call 911 and tell the police to come get him.
“We would like to thank the public for their help and continued support,” read a post on the Melvindale Police Department Facebook page. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and hope that justice will be served!”
It’s unknown when authorities will begin the extradition process.
Carter allegedly shot Sean Lawrence Key at Play Atlantis, 19400 Allen Road. Both men reportedly didn’t know each other, but police said there was tension between their respective families. Police Lt. John Allen said fights broke out at the fun center while the two families were celebrating birthday parties for a 1-year-old and 3-year-old.
Allen said there were about three fights going on when Carter reportedly left the building and returned with a gun. He pointed it at a woman and when she ducked, the gunman then focused on Key.
Allen said Key tried to shield the children and adults around him from harm while trying to get the gunman to focus on him. Carter then reportedly shot Key in the head and fled the building.
The lieutenant said Key died protecting others.
An estimated 100 people were inside the center when the melee began with pushing, then shoving and then fighting as many children watched.
“Justice will be served. The good Lord knows exactly where he is and he will be brought to light,” said Key’s relative, Juanita Gardner, of Detroit, just days before Carter’s arrest.
