MELVINDALE — When State Police attempted to stop a stolen Dodge pickup truck on I-75 near Outer Drive at 7:25 p.m. July 12, the driver, a 29-year-old Taylor man, refused to stop, and a police chase ensued.

At Outer Drive and Hanna the driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light, and hit a man and woman in a Ford Focus with the right-of-way. Both occupants of the Focus were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released, and a male passenger in the stolen vehicle was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and then released.

The driver of the stolen pickup sustained serious injuries, and was admitted to a local hospital.

The driver was found to have multiple warrants against him, and a search warrant was obtained for a blood draw, which suggested drugged driving was a factor in the crash.

Local media reported that the owner of the badly damaged truck works as an independent roofing contractor, and is reportedly upset about losing the vehicle, which he needs for work.
