TAYLOR – A trial scheduled to begin this month will determine if a 25-year-old Taylor man will face up to life in prison for the May 2015 death of his 4-year-old daughter.

Following a final conference last month, Demar Warner Canada is set to face a jury beginning July 18 charged with felony murder and second degree murder.

Police and prosecutors said Canada’s 4-year-old daughter, Aaliyah, was found unresponsive in May 2015 when officers were called to Canada’s house in the 25100 block of Darian Street. The child was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead on May 24, 2015.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Maria Miller said the Wayne County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be severe head trauma.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said Canada had previously been charged with child abuse in 2011.

Canada remained in custody without bond and awaits next week’s trial before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Shannon Walker.
