DEARBORN – Recreation and Parks is teaming up with Michigan Cornhole to bring a cornhole tournament to the city’s Homecoming festival Aug. 6.
Widely popular at tailgate events throughout the Midwest, cornhole is an American lawn game in which players take turns throwing bags of corn (or beans) at a raised platform with a hole in the far end.
The tournament will begin at noon at Ford Field Park, 22051 Cherry Hill. Check-in is at 11 a.m.
Tournament players must be 18 years of age or older. Cost is $25 per person, or $50 for a two-person team.
There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place.
Players must register by July 30. Registration may be completed online at dearborntheater.com (a $2 online fee per registration will apply); by phone at 313-943-2354; or in person from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the Michael A. Guido Theater Box Office, 15801 Michigan Ave.
Michigan Cornhole has been bringing people together via cornhole game play for six years. The group sells boards, bags, and other merchandise in addition to hosting social and competitive bar leagues and tournaments throughout the state.
Dearborn’s 2016 Homecoming festival takes place Aug. 5 to 7 and includes live music, food, family activities, reunions, a carnival, and — a crowd favorite — fireworks displays Saturday and Sunday nights.
New this year at the festival is a focus on wellness, nutrition and activities, to promote the initiatives of Healthy Dearborn, a broad-base coalition of community partners.
To that end, Homecoming 2016 also features a new 5K and Family Fun Run on Sunday morning, (register at http://triviumracing.com/event/dearborn-homecoming-5k) and a free Healthy Dearborn Family Bike Ride on Saturday (info and registration at http://www.cityofdearborn.org/community/healthydearborn).
