Long-abandoned Taylor school burns

TAYLOR — Several Downriver firefighters spent hours extinguishing a blaze Friday at the vacant Fletcher Elementary School on Pardee Road.

There were no injuries and the cause is unknown.

The structure was erected in 1938 and due to blight, the city was expected to use a $100,000 grant to demolish the structure this year. City officials said it has been vacant for more than 30 years.

Residents in the area experienced low water pressure temporarily.

“It should have been destroyed years ago,” said resident Shawn Moore. “Now we are paying the price.”
