SOUTHGATE – A 26-year-old Melvindale man who claims he was a victim in the shooting-death of a co-worker, is expected back in court Sept. 19 for a preliminary examination of the evidence against him.

Devon Hampton allegedly shot and killed a co-worker about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at AJM Packaging, 11800 Reeck Road. He was charged with first-degree murder, felonious assault, felony firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police are not releasing information about the victim who was shot in the chest.

Hampton was arraigned Sept. 4 in 36th District court in Romulus on charges in connection with the shooting death. He told the judge he was a victim and was not a threat to society.

Police said a .38-caliber pistol was found near the scene and it was registered to Hampton. Hampton told police he is living in a motel and works part-time at AJM.
