November 13, 2016 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

DEARBORN – Recent law school graduate Steven Hurbis joined the Detroit-based McKeen & Associates law firm as an associate attorney.

“We are thrilled to welcome this young attorney to our firm,” firm founder and managing partner Brian McKeen said. “While still in law school Steven has proven himself a skilled trial advocate already through his activities and distinguished himself with academic excellence. He will be an invaluable addition to our team.”

Hurbis earned his juris doctor degree from the University of Illinois College of Law, and a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, where he majored in political science.

As an undergraduate, Hurbis was president of the Eastern Michigan Mock Trial Association where he competed in trial advocacy competitions for three years and distinguished himself as an eight-time Outstanding Attorney Award winner and with the honor of All-Regional Attorney.

In law school, Hurbis competed in both trial advocacy and moot court competitions where he won his first year trial advocacy competition and placed fourth in the moot court competition. As a member of the College of Law’s trial team, Hurbis was twice recognized as Best Overall Advocate and in his third year his trial team won its region and placed fifth in the nation at the American Association for Justice’s national trial team competition.

As a law student, Hurbis represented clients at the University of Illinois Civil Litigation Clinic and also worked for a year in the Community Preservation Clinic where he represented clients in danger of losing their homes. He successfully won a motion resulting in the largest sanctions awarded in the Community Preservation Clinic’s history.

Hurbis was honored with the University of Illinois College of Law’s Dr. Paul M. Lisneck Excellence in Trial Advoacy and Ethics Award and the Rickert Award for Excellence in Advocacy. He also is the winner of the Richard Ferens Scholarship for Excellence in Trial Advocacy.
