HEIGHTS — Star International Academy, 24425 Hass, has earned the top ranking for safest public high school in Michigan by Niche.com, according to a 2016 ranking.
The school beat out more than 1,300 public high schools in Michigan for the tittle earning the A in health and safety.
Under the analysis, a public high school was defined as a school located in one of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia; offers at least grade 11 or 12; and has sufficient data.
In Michigan, 449 public high schools were given a number ranking and Star International Academy earned the No. 1 spot.
“We received an email from Niche regarding the news and everyone was thrilled,” Star International Academy Principal Ali Bazzi said. “It’s not a surprise because we do a lot of things well here.”
Seven factors considered were parent and student surveys on health and safety, expenses per student, expulsion rate, in-school suspension rate, law enforcement referral rate, out-of-school suspension rate and school-related arrest rate.
The academy scored 4 out of 5 on the parent and student surveys on health and safety and had an annual expenses-per-student cost of $9,961.
In the expulsion rate, in-school suspension rate, law enforcement referral rate, out-of-school suspension rate and school-related arrest rate categories the school recorded 0 percent in each category.
“We are extremely thrilled because we take pride in the safety of our students,” Supt. Nawal Hamadeh said. “Safety not only impacts our students, but also the ability of our staff to teach within the school.
“Our teachers are on the front line of helping our students achieve their goals.”
The school also received the bronze medal on the national level by U.S. News & World Report for Best High School.
“Schools are ranked based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare students for college,” according to the study.
Bazzi said the bronze medal national ranking and top safety state ranking go hand-in-hand because both are needed to have a top school.
