Matt Holowicki powers through his first of two 1-pound burritos on his way to repeating as champion in the Epic Burrito Challenge at Del Taco in Dearborn Heights May 5. Holowicki, 48, of Plymouth finished the two pounds of food in 1 minute, 1 second, besting his winning 2016 time by 7 seconds. The nine contestants were given 15 minutes to complete the task, with the winner receiving a year’s supply of Epic Burritos. Ryan Gold of Plymouth finished second, about three minutes behind Holowicki, and Katie Pope of Gibraltar and Robert Bell of Detroit tied for third. A self-proclaimed amateur competitive eater (“I know not to try to run with the big dogs”), Holowicki has been competing for 10 years, winning contests ranging from hot dogs and pierogi to paczki and pie.
