ALLEN PARK – Marriott is building a Townplace Suites in the northeast section of the former city hall property, hoping to attract people who will be working at the new Ford wind tunnel.
Mayor William Matakas said Oct. 9 that Marriott is developing the back four acres, while the front of the property, closer to Southfield Road, will be used for retail development, with fast food or a coffee shop most likely, but no permits have been filed yet for the proposed development on the southwest side of the lot.
“Plans have been filed to build the Marriott,” Matakas said. “Ford is working on that new wind tunnel and electric battery testing facility, and is going to lease that to all engineers from all different companies, so they are going to be bringing engineers in, and they want to be as close to that site as possible.”
Matakas said the Townplace Suite units will likely have kitchenettes, and will be based on the extended stay hotel concept.
City Administrator Mark Kibby said at the Oct. 6 city council meeting that the development has made progress, but it is “costing a little bit more” than originally anticipated.
