DEARBORN — Edsel Ford High School student Hasanain Alkhaleeli, 18, died in a single vehicle crash the early afternoon of Nov. 20 in Dearborn.
Neither police nor the school released details of the crash as of Nov. 21; however, security video revealed that Alkhaleeli’s vehicle was traveling east on Rotunda at a high rate of speed. Witnesses said the driver’s side of the vehicle hit a pole near Commerce Drive South. The cause of the crash was not known.
EFHS Principal Scott Casebolt sent a letter home to parents addressing the crash and the services that would be provided to assist students, staff or parents.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you serious and sad news,” Casebolt wrote. “Early this afternoon, a student from Edsel Ford High School was involved in a fatal car accident. Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing any additional information at this time.
“This type of very sudden and tragic loss will impact the staff, students, and our community,” he wrote. “Although many people will hear about this event over our extended Thanksgiving break, we will have our own counselors and social workers as well as additional support from our district crisis team at the school on Monday, November 26, to assist staff, students, and parents who may be struggling emotionally with this tragic loss.”
Casebolt added that when events like the crash happen, the school and community are often filled with questions about how and why they do.
“We may never understand the answers to those questions and right now that is not the focus of our energy,” he wrote. “I ask everyone to focus on how we as a community can come together to help our Edsel family through this very difficult time. The comfort of a caring community is the most important gift we can offer the family at this time.”
