TAYLOR – A house fire on Jackson Street between Hayes and Champaign Thursday night claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son, Fire Chief Stephen Portis said.
The late woman’s 4-year-old daughter was taken to Beaumont Children’s Hospital for treatment, then transferred Friday morning to another hospital that is better equipped to meet her needs, Beaumont spokesperson Paula Rivera-Kerr said Friday morning.
Taylor Communications Director Karl Ziomek said at press time fire officials are still investigating, but foul play is not suspected. The fire is believed to have started in the basement.
The fire started about 11 p.m., according to published reports.
A source close to the investigation said that from the street, the house does not appear to be damaged, and it is likely that smoke inhalation was the cause of the fatalities.
The bodies of the victims are at the Wayne County coroner’s office.
Calls to Beaumont Children’s Hospital about the condition of the 4-year-old girl were not returned by press time.
