TAYLOR — Boy Scout Benjamin Wetzel was honored by the mayor and City Council Sept. 17 for his work locating many lost or misplaced memorial stones at Heritage Park.
The longtime Scout, who was a member of the first Taylor High School graduating class in 2019, took on the work as part of his Eagle Scout project. He started in the Scout program when he was 5 as a Tiger Cub at McDowell Elementary School and worked his way through the ranks.
It took Wetzel approximately a month to complete the work, which was appreciated by the city, and the families who participated in the old memorial stone program.
His work accounted for approximately 40 stones in the park, all dedicated to the memory of former Taylor residents or family names.
Over the course of time, it became increasingly difficult to account for some stones. Some were stolen or vandalized. Others became misplaced as vegetation grew, or mulch or stones were added to different landscapes.
Wetzel’s list is on file at the Taylor Recreation Department and will eventually be posted on the city’s website.
Wetzel credited his family for all of their help on the project.
