SOUTHGATE – Mayor Joseph Kuspa announced at the Oct. 2 City Council study session that he won the Downriver Mayor Chili Cook Off Challenge, sponsored by the Ecorse Historical Society.

The Sept. 28 Chili Cup Challenge, the first of what may become an annual event, was spearheaded by Ecorse Mayor Lamar Tidwell and Ecorse Historical Society Chairwoman Iris Morgan.

Kuspa said Southgate City Treasurer James Dallos was on hand to assist.

The mayor credited Southgate restaurant owner Steve Mallie for providing the winning chili recipe.

“It was a great recipe, which included over two pounds of prime rib,” Kuspa said. “It is the first time I have ever had chili with prime rib. I was quite delighted.”

He said Southgate now will retain the honor of being the first winner of a chili cookoff challenge, which could become an annual event.
