RIVERVIEW – A park patron reported the morning of Aug. 21 that he saw a man in his 30s, in a burgundy shirt, dump chlorine into the pond at Young Patriots Park.

The person dumping the chemical falsely claimed to a witness that he was a city employee, and that he was trying to get rid of the “fish smell” in the pond.

The white plastic container, which the suspect dumped into a park trash bin, was labeled as containing chlorine tablets, and had a strong odor of the chemical.

A Department of Public Works employee took the container to police officers, who took it into evidence. However, it had already been handled by multiple individuals, which would compromise any remain fingerprint evidence.

A witness said that a surveillance camera at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library might have captured footage of the incident.
