DEARBORN – The City Council made an early New Year’s resolution Dec. 30 when it approved up to $200,000 in funding for outdoor dining equipment to help city restaurants survive the pandemic.
The funding authorizes city administrators to develop a plan to provide tents, along with tables, seating, heating and lighting, in public areas near Dearborn restaurants.
City Council President Susan Dabaja developed the proposal after speaking to small business owners during a Dec. 19 virtual forum.
“Business owners shared their struggles and concerns,” she said. “I felt their frustration.”
Dabaja said she spoke to city officials Dec. 21 about securing tents that would be compliant with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for outdoor dining.
The City Council then approved the funding at a special Dec. 30 meeting, and authorized an extension of outdoor seating and dining allowances through April 31 during the meeting, as well.
“I want to applaud the efforts of all those working to make it happen, especially the Economic and Community Development Department,” Dabaja said.
