DEARBORN – The city recognized April as Arab American Heritage Month, promoting the many meaningful contributions that Arab Americans make to the community and country.
“Arab Americans are an important part of our family here in Dearborn,” Mayor John O’Reilly Jr. said. “This month gives us all an opportunity to learn more about the significant accomplishments and successes of Arab Americans.”
For most of American history, Arab Americans have made a substantial positive impact on virtually every aspect of American society: in medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, military service, arts and culture and literature.
During April, events will be taking place in Dearborn to celebrate the diverse Arab American community.
The Dearborn Historical Museum will open an exhibition about the South End neighborhood on April 19. The exhibition will emphasize the history of that neighborhood, including all the groups that have called it their home over time.
In addition, the Arab American National Museum will host a number of events, and will display weekly window installations viewable from the street by Yemeni American artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz throughout the month of April.

Dearborn is not alone in celebrating Arab American Heritage Month.
Across the nation, cultural institutions, school districts, municipalities, state legislatures, and public servants will be taking part in numerous events that acknowledge the rich heritage and culture of Arab Americans.
This annual celebration, spearheaded by the Arab America Foundation, is formally recognized around the country by state legislators, mayors, governors, and members of Congress. The Arab America Foundation is a non-profit educational and cultural organization that promotes Arab heritage in the U.S., educates Americans about Arab heritage and identity, and connects and empowers Arab Americans.
