LINCOLN PARK – A domestic argument ended tragically July 7 after a man non-fatally shot his wife, then fled to a nearby yard, where he used the gun to kill himself.
Two minor children fled the house and called police officers.
The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening and she is expected to recover fully, Police Chief Ray Watters said.
The incident occurred at a house near River and North Shore drives, south of Emmons Boulevard, about four blocks south of Council Point Park, and a block west of the south branch of the Ecorse River.
Mayor Thomas Karnes said that during the argument, the husband pointed a handgun at his wife, 36, and shot through her hand into her chest, after which she fled to a neighboring house.
“The suspect at some point left home as officers were arriving,” Karnes said. “SWAT was called in, and attempted contact. The suspect was discovered in a nearby yard, dead to a self-inflicted gunshot.”
He said the Police Department handled the situation professionally.
“They responded quickly, thereby limiting further injuries or victims,” Karnes said. “We are fortunate to have the Downriver Mutual Aid SWAT team available to assist at times like this, and thank all the members for their help.”
