RIVERVIEW — Either an identity thief or a clerical error allowed a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee to be purchased in February from Feldman Jeep in Woodhaven, in a Riverview woman’s name, which came to light Feb. 4 when the vehicle’s registration was mailed to her residence.

The woman reported the possible fraud to Riverview police officers on March 5, who then ran the vehicle identification number associated with the registration, and found that the license plate assigned to the VIN was associated with a Milford resident, for whom a phone message was left.

The complainant said she would visit the dealership in an attempt to resolve the mystery, and said she would provide follow-up information for the Riverview police department.

She was given an identity theft packet to complete if the transaction were determined to be a case of identity theft.

The woman said a credit check did not show that credit was applied for in her name to purchase the vehicle.
