ALLEN PARK — A fatal car crash on northbound Southfield Freeway at Outer Drive July 20 claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl. Also, a three-month-old boy is in critical condition.
The crash — which occurred about 8:50 p.m. — closed all northbound lanes on Southfield from I-94 to Outer Drive.
A Michigan State Police investigation revealed that a passenger car was northbound on Southfield in the right lane. The second vehicle was driven by a 30-year-old woman from Detroit in the same lane, according to the MSP Metro Detroit Twitter account.
That second vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the first vehicle. The second vehicle continued north crossing all lanes before colliding with the median.
Preliminary information posted by MSP said that the 2-year-old (previous identified as a 7-year-old) was not belted and was sitting behind the 30-year-old driver.
The three-month-old was sitting in a car seat with only a lap belt over the seat. She was thrown from the seat causing the serious injuries.
According to MSP, troopers and members of the crash reconstruction unit are continuing to investigate the crash which includes blood results, medical examiner reports and vehicle inspections.
