SOUTHGATE – Gil Vega, 44, was charged Aug. 4 with the fatal shooting of his wife, Ilena Luna, 43, also of Southgate.

Police officers went to her residence in the 16850 block of Walter Street, which she shared with Vega, for a wellness check Aug. 1, after a relative, who had not heard from her since July 29, expressed concern.

It is alleged that Vega shot and killed Luna in their residence, then transported her body to a Washtenaw County location.

Vega was arrested Aug. 1 and charged with first degree murder, tampering with evidence and felony firearm. He was arraigned and remanded Aug. 4 in 28th District Court before Judge Elizabeth Mullins. A probable cause conference will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 12, with a 9 a.m. Aug. 19 preliminary examination of the evidence against him.
