SOUTHGATE – Residents renewed a 1-mill Parks and Recreation millage Aug. 2, which will run for five years, beginning Dec. 1, at an effective rate of 0.9896 mills.
The levy, which will generate approximately $777,000 its first year, will fund the acquisition, construction, furnishing, equipping and operation of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department improvements. More than 75 percent of city voters favored the proposal, with 24 percent of the city’s registered voters casting ballots.

Southgate City Councilmember Mark Farrah said during the Aug. 3 City Council study session that he was pleased residents renewed the Parks and Recreation millage during the Aug. 2 primary.
Mayor Joseph Kuspa thanked residents during the Aug. 3 City Council study session for continuing to support the Parks and Recreation millage.
“Our ‘Say Yes to Rec’ campaign was coordinated by our Parks and Recreation Commission, and was supported throughout our community by a nearly 3-to-1 margin,” he said. “I believe that this signifies real support for our plans to redevelop our community, update our recreational offerings, and, most importantly, continue to make our city more family friendly.”
Councilmember Mark Farrah thanked the community on behalf of the Recreation Commission, to which he is a liaison, for renewing the millage.
“There are a lot of good things to come in the next five years, so we appreciate that support,” he said.
