Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Dearborn Police Department
DEARBORN — Police are investigating a crash in which a Ford Econoline van avoiding a traffic stop by a Wayne County Sherrif’s deputy hit a Chevrolet Trax, killing its driver, a 61-year-old Lincoln Park woman.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a sherrif’s deputy was attempting to stop the van eastbound on Michigan Avenue for a traffic violation. The van continued driving at a high rate of speed and proceeded through a red light at Gulley, striking the Trax traveling north on Gulley. The Trax driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the van fled on foot but was apprehended a short distance away by Dearborn police officers. The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending formal charges from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and we offer our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Police Commander Timothy McHale said. “I ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision to please contact the Dearborn Police Department.”
