TRENTON – The City Council approved emergency road repairs for the Toledo Street and W. Jefferson Avenue intersection, to alleviate the pothole and flooding problem, during its Dec. 19 meeting.
Department of Public Works Director Kevin Sargent said in a Dec. 14 memo to the council that the flooding problem is getting worse, with storm water having nowhere to drain. In addition, water fills up potholes and freezes, damaging the roadway more.
“The excess water also caused damage to one of our water main valves in the intersection,” he said in the memo. “Our city engineer designed a solution for the problem by paving the end of the street and extending the ditch to catch the storm water.”
The city’s current concrete contractor, Dominic Gaglio, was having difficulty obtaining concrete at the end of the construction season, due to supply chain shortages, so the city went to a contractor it used in the past, GV Cement, to do the work.
The $39,000 for the work will be supplied by the local road capital improvement budget.
