TAYLOR — A former employee of a local retail shop was conned out of paying for a shipment in Bitcoin by a caller who claimed to be friends with the store owner, but who was essentially out to defraud the victim.

The former employee, a 22-year-old man, said he received a request from an unknown person to pay $980 in Bitcoin for a FedEx package that was being delivered to the store. He did so, then transferred the payment to the caller using his cell phone. When he attempted to confirm the transaction, the caller did not reply.
