TAYLOR — A 66-year-old man was scammed online out of $30,000 on Jan. 8 after a pop-up virus warning on his computer screen told him to call a number fraudulently posing as Microsoft support.
The person the victim spoke to online said his computer was infected with child pornography, and that for a Bitcoin payment of $30,000 he would resolve the problem. However, the scammer continued to ask his victim for more money, which aroused his suspicion, and encouraged him to break contact and visit his local police department to file a report.
