ALLEN PARK — A man was arrested for his second operating while impaired offense, as well as for driving with a suspended license and operating without vehicle insurance at 2:47 a.m. Feb. 22, after he fell asleep in his black 2018 Chevy Equinox at a traffic light on Southfield Road near Bob Seger Drive.
A police officer pulled his vehicle up behind the man, who failed to move forward through three traffic light cycles while asleep at the wheel with his foot on the brake and his vehicle engine running.
Another police officer arrived on the scene and position their vehicle in front of the sleeping driver before an officer approached the driver to awaken him.
When the officer initially knocked on the window, the man took his foot off the brake and the car began rolling forward, toward the patrol vehicle in front of them, until he understood the police officer’s command to put the vehicle in park and turn the engine off.
The man, who was then ordered to step outside of the vehicle, smelled of intoxicants, and had bloodshot eyes and a glassy stare. He admitted to drinking alcohol earlier and agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed.
A preliminary breath test was administered, and the man had a blood-alcohol content of 0.108, higher than the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.
His vehicle was impounded and towed, and he was taken to the Allen Park police station, where he was booked and held.
