Dearborn Library Foundation announces Juneteenth essay contest for Wayne County high school students

March 17, 2023 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

The Dearborn Library Foundation will sponsor a Juneteenth Essay Contest for high school students in Wayne County with a $1,000 educational scholarship grand prize.

The entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. April 24; results will be announced at a special event for the chosen essay writer on June 17.

This contest provides an opportunity for students to showcase their writing skills and learn about the significance of Juneteenth in American history.

The contest is open to all high school students in Wayne County. Participants are asked to write an essay, of no more than 1,000 words, on the importance of Juneteenth and its impact on American society. The essays will be judged by a panel of experts.

Essay winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship award for educational use, a certificate of achievement, and a personalized Juneteenth commemorative trophy. Winners will also be honored in a ceremony where their essays can be read aloud, and their accomplishments celebrated.

“We are excited to offer this essay contest to high school students in Wayne County,” contest co-chair Julia Kapilango said.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about Juneteenth and its significance in American history, while also showcasing their writing skills,” contest co-chair Brianne Goodwin said.

Juneteenth commemorates the day when African American slaves in Texas were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865 – two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This year marks the 156th anniversary of this historic day.
