RIVERVIEW β A 30-year-old Detroit man with a prior drunken driving arrest was taken into custody for operating under the influence of alcohol at 1:08 a.m. March 18 after a police officer saw him run stops signs at U-turn lanes on Fort Street as well as speeding through a nearby subdivision.
The police officer followed the driver to Huntington North Apartments, where a traffic stop was initiated. His passenger exited the car, indicated that she had to go to the bathroom and said, βHeβs drunk. Please get him.β
The driver smelled of intoxicants, his eyes were glossy and bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He vaguely admitted to drinking earlier.
He failed numerous standardized field sobriety tests and refused a preliminary breath test, after which he was arrested for operating while impaired. His vehicle was impounded and towed, and because he had a prior drunken driving offense, his license plate was destroyed and replaced with a paper license plate.
He was taken to the police station for booking, where he agreed to a preliminary breath test. It was administered and the man had a blood-alcohol content of 0.26, more than three times the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.
