ALLEN PARK — A man who thwarted a phone scam artist who tried to relieve him of the money in his bank account the morning of April 19 documented the attempted fraud by filing a police report.
The would-be victim said a man with a foreign accent called him from a New York state area code with the news that he had been awarded a $14,200 grant, then asked for his bank account information so they could deposit the money directly into his account. The intended mark declined to cooperate.
When he spoke to police, the man said he realized it was unlikely that the phone fraudster could be found and prosecuted, but he felt it was important to document the attempt.
