RIVERVIEW — Following a hit-and-run crash on Pennsylvania Road near Fordline Street in Southgate the night of May 6, a driver in a blue Volkswagen Passat with moderate rear vehicle damage was seen turning into a Riverview apartment complex, where the driver jumped a curb before stopping for a pursuing police officer.
The driver, a 49-year-old Dearborn Heights woman, was disoriented and smelled strongly of intoxicants. She failed multiple standardized field sobriety tests and refused to take a preliminary breath test in the field.
Her vehicle was impounded and towed, and she was taken into custody. Once she was transported to the police station, she became more cooperative. A preliminary breath test was administered, and the woman had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15, nearly twice the 0.08 limit for legally drunk in Michigan.
She was cited for operating while intoxicated and for refusing the initial preliminary breath test. Southgate police officers were told that a possible Southgate hit-and-run driver was in custody.
