WYANDOTTE — A 23-year-old Melvindale man was arrested at 1:59 a.m. Jan. 7 for operating while intoxicated and for fleeing and eluding police officers after he drove at a high rate of speed with his vehicle lights turned out, the hit a curb and tried to flee on foot.
The driver was first spotted on Oak Street in Wyandotte, then on westbound Eureka near 12th Street, where a traffic stop was initiated. However, the man accelerated, driving north on Fort Street at more than 120 mph, running red lights, despite the cold, wet road conditions.
Pursuit was terminated on Fort Street near Goddard Road, but the driver continued to speed, and lost control on Fort Street near Champaign Road in Lincoln Park, hitting a curb and rendering his vehicle undrivable.
When police officers from Wyandotte and Lincoln Park arrived at the location, the man attempted to flee on foot, but was captured after a few blocks. The driver was then found to be intoxicated.
