SOUTHGATE — A man who used a blow torch to melt the ice from his residential back deck on Chestnut Street the night of Feb. 11 inadvertently caused his house to catch on fire.
A responding police officer, who was first on scene, saw smoke emanating from the basement of the house. Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and were able to put out the blaze with fire extinguishers.
