RIVERVIEW – A police officer and four firefighter paramedics were honored during the April 7 City Council meeting for their successful life-saving efforts on a man Jan. 11 at Parke East Court.
Police Chief John Allen recognized Police Officer Jonathan Garcia, while Fire Chief Glenn Owens recognized Fire Sgt. Brian Davenport and Firefighter Paramedics Alan Kast, Alyssa Kowalski and Joseph Strassner.
The life-saving incident occurred when a man was reported lying on the ground, unresponsive, near Parke East Court after suffering an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow.
Garcia, who was first to arrive, administered a shock with a defibrillator, then began administering CPR.
When firefighter paramedics arrived on the scene, they subsequently took over the CPR, with a successful outcome for the resident.
Swift expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the first responders.
“I know you say you’re just doing your job, but because you do your job so well, we’re a lot safer,” he said.
