TRENTON — A man reported that on June 14 he received a message on his laptop computer that it had been infected by a virus and gave a phone number to call for help.
The person who responded to the call instructed him to buy $11,000 in gift cards and read him the numbers. The man did so, but became suspicious when the man asked for an additional $30,000 in gift card transactions.
The victim contacted his financial institution, and since he used his credit card with them to purchase the gift cards, it was reported as a fraud and the account was canceled, with a new card issued. He said he was not out any money at the present time.
