HEIGHTS – A historical marker for the former Wallaceville School was unveiled Oct. 11 at the southeast corner of Ann Arbor Trail and Silvery Lane.
The school, which was in use from 1938 to 1979, was eventually closed down, followed by the building’s 1987 demolition.
The stone, black like a chalkboard, with chalk-like white letters, recalls the school’s history.
A temporary rendering of the school was attached to the monument for the unveiling, as the delivery of a ceramic plaque with an artistic rendering of the school was delayed by the Canadian mail strike.
The marker indicates that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered the construction of an eight-room school house on the site in 1938 as part of a Works Progress Administration, a New Deal federal agency during the Great Depression.
In 1953, the school was expanded to 16 rooms, and the playground and sports facilities were enhanced.
Newly appointed Mayor Mo Baydoun spoke at the unveiling, as did former teacher Judi Kulchar and a former student, Allan Livingston.
David Carlson, a representative from Legacy Park Circle condominiums, the property owners that approved the placement of the historical marker, was on hand for the unveiling.

A temporary rendering of the Wallaceville School was placed on the monument for the unveiling since the permanent ceramic art work was delayed in transit by the Canadian postal strike.
