MELVINDALE – A driver crashed and his car burned following a police chase that resulted in the apprehension of a parole absconder Jan. 7 that passed through Melvindale and ended in Detroit.
Police officers joined the Michigan Department of Corrections Absconder Recovery Unit Jan. 7 on Oakwood Boulevard until the driver crashed into a utility pole on Dix Highway in Detroit.
Police Chief Christopher Egan said at that 2:07 p.m. Jan. 7 Melvindale police officers joined recovery efforts when the driver was in the 3000 block of Oakwood Boulevard. The man continued driving east on Oakwood, then turned onto Dix Highway and crossed into Detroit, where he lost control and hit a utility pole.
The driver then attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. He was charged with fleeing and eluding, and also faces home invasion charges in another jurisdiction.
The driver appeared uninjured and refused medical treatment, while his vehicle was damaged by the crash and resultant fire.
Egan said that the police officers took precautions to avoid negatively impacting other drivers during the pursuit.
