TRENTON — A person selling a curtain rod for $15 on Facebook Marketplace was conned by a criminal who ended up stealing more than $10,000 from them.
The con began with the person sending $515 for the $15 item via Cash App. They then asked for the $500 to be refunded to their account, and eventually threatened her and her family if she did not comply.
The fraudster then said they would send $4,000 to her credit union account, and asked her to convert it to Bitcoin. However, once the con artist had her credit union account number, they emptied $9,967 from the account.
The victim has contacted her credit union, which closed the account and advised her to file a police report.
