ALLEN PARK – Construction of a city dog park at 24000 Outer Drive, near the Department of Public Works, is under way, City Administrator Tom Murray said during the April 14 City Council meeting.

The park will be called Rusty’s Dog Park, and the dog mascot statue from the former Baker College campus will be displayed nearby.

Murray said fencing is up, concrete has been poured, water bowls have been ordered and surveillance cameras will be installed.

Since the dog park will be located in Melvindale, the park will be opened to residents of both Allen Park and Melvindale who register their dogs. Registrations will be specific to a particular dog, and will not be interchangeable. The owner of a registered dog will have a key fob to enter the dog park, with a collar fob for each registered canine.

Registered dogs will need to be up-to-date on their shots.

Murray said he hopes to see an opening during the first week of June.

Dog park fees are tentatively set to be $35 for the first dog and $15 for a second dog.

The park will have a human rest room, and plastic bag stations for pet owners to use to clean up their dog’s waste.

The dog park will have two separate fenced off areas, with large dog and small dog areas separated by fences, with a five-foot wide walkway between the two areas.

Murray said the dog park will have 30 parking spots, with more available near the DPW building after business hours.
