Six extraordinary musicals and two bonus shows will bring music and entertainment to ATG Detroit’s Broadway in Detroit offerings in the upcoming season, with all of the shows making their Detroit premiere, and with all but one at the Fisher Theater. (“Death Becomes Her” will be at the Detroit Opera House.)
The shows include: “The Notebook” Sept. 22 to Oct. 4, “Maybe Happy Ending” Oct. 20 to Nov. 1, “The Great Gatsby” Nov. 17 to 29, “Boop! The Musical” Dec. 1 to 13, “Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical” Jan. 12 to 24, and “Death Becomes Her” March 23 to April 4 (DOH).
“Oh, Mary!” Feb. 23 to 28, and “Water for Elephants” March 2 to 7, are available to subscribers at renewal and as add-ons to new season subscribers.
Starting off the new season is “The Notebook,” based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel and film, and featuring an original score by singer and songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. It explores the love story of Allie and Noah, who come from two different worlds, and the forces that threaten to pull them apart.
The musical tells their story at three distinct stages of their lives: young, middle and older, and features older Noah narrating their history to Allie, who has Alzheimer’s. Throughout the story, the audience sees the passion of their youth, the complexities of their middle years, and their devotion during their final chapter.
It was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2024, and nominated for a Grammy Award in 2025 for Best Musical Theater Album.
The Tony Award-winning South Korean musical “Maybe Happy Ending,” performed without intermission, follows two human-like helper-bots, Oliver and Claire, who discover each other in Seoul in the late 21st century and develop a connection that they once thought was impossible for their kind, exploring love and mortality as their batteries and parts begin to decline.
“The Great Gatsby” musical, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, gives the Roaring Twenties a contemporary flare with a jazz and pop-influenced score and Twenties dance styles, while following the novel’s focus on love, longing and the American dream.
The show won a 2024 Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical.
Fitzgerald’s prose is translated into more natural-sounding dialogue as self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby pursues the illusive Daisy Buchanan, while World War I veteran and Midwesterner Nick Carraway is drawn into their world of wealth, obsession and danger in a land of “enchantment and illusions, where love and dreams are pursued and betrayed.”
“Boop! The Musical,” which was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2025, is based on the animated character Betty Boop, who leaves her black-and-white world to find colorful adventure and romance in modern-day New York City and ends up at Comic Con, where, to her surprise, people seem to know her.
Betty Boop also discovers the world of color as a young man compliments her on her blue eyes.
When she is able to return to ToonTown, color starts to appear as Betty Boop also discovers love.
The critically acclaimed “Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical,” launches the new year with the story of a 1943 secret World War II mission that combines a fast pace with laugh-out-loud humor.
The story of a World War II British deception operation received a 2024 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
The plan was to plant a corpse dressed as a British soldier carrying plans for the Nazis to discover, leading them to believe that the Allied invasion will occur in Sardinia instead of Sicily, their actual planned invasion site.
Closing the regular season is the Tony Award-winning musical “Death Becomes Her,” which will run at the Detroit Opera House.
Based on the 1992 cult classic film, the story follows two competitive frenemies who drink a mysterious potion that promises everlasting youth, but which comes with deadly side effects.
Despite their immortality, the women, who hate each other, suffer deadly injuries but are still alive, and they scheme to find a way to hide their bodily injuries. As they begin to realize that they will outlive their friends and family, they understand that they will never have a “happy ending.”
Two exciting extra musicals include “Oh, Mary!” which is a dark comedy and an 80-minute, one-act play reimagining Mary Todd Lincoln as a miserable, narcissistic, alcoholic cabaret performer in the weeks before President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
It won two 2025 Tony Awards, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The other bonus musical, the Tony Award-nominated “Water for Elephants,” adapted from Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel, follows Jacob, a young man in the 1930s, who joins a struggling traveling circus, and focuses on chosen family, grief and resilience, and kindness and compassion.
The troupe brings an elephant into their show to try to reinvigorate it, and Jacob becomes responsible for the animal.
The show features aerialists, acrobats and life-sized puppets to create the magic of the big top, and features a score with folk-pop and bluegrass music.
