HEIGHTS – The city launched its summer reading program, “Unearth a Story” June 20 at Caroline Kennedy library with entertainment, crafts and treats.
In addition to Crazy Craig Juggling and family bingo, attendees were able to receive a free book, make sand art and scratch off bookmarks, and enjoy a snow cone.
Library Outreach Manager A.J. Wyatt-Moir said the summer reading program is important because it encourages the entire community to embrace reading this summer.
“It is especially important for our kids to bridge that gap when they are reading in school and starting in the fall,” she said. “We don’t want that summer slide.”
Wyatt-Moir said it is important that libraries step in and make sure that children continue to be prepared for success in school.
She said they have an adult summer reading program as well, and it is a great way to make sure adults who are already avid readers are getting some fun rewards over the summer, and it encourages adults who want to step back into reading or listening to audio books.
Wyatt-Moir said adults will also enjoy crafts, lecture series and cooking programs at the library throughout the summer.
Library Director Michael McCafferty said information is the most valuable commodity on Earth, and it is something he feels is important to share with the community.
“We are making sure our kids and our families are prepared,” he said.
McCafferty said last year’s summer reading program was successful, and he hope to capitalize on that past success this summer.
He said reading is important, regardless of whether it is via a physical book or on a screen, which he said can be a matter of personal taste.
“It’s sort of like lifting weights for your mind,” McCafferty said. “Putting your mind through an exercise routine, sort of stretching things a little bit and ensure that it broadens your horizons.”
