The Ambassador Theater Group’s Broadway in Detroit season begins Sept. 22 to Oct. 4 with “The Notebook – The Musical” at the Fisher Theater, 3011 W. Grand Boulevard in Detroit.
The musical is based on the 1996 bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, which was made into the 2004 romantic drama film.
“‘The Notebook’ is ultimately a celebration of life, love, and the power of memory,” said producers Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch. “Audiences first fell in love with this timeless story as a novel, then as an iconic film, and now they can experience it anew as a moving musical event.
“With multi-platinum artist Ingrid Michaelson’s unforgettable score and Tony Award nominated Bekah Brunstetter’s beautifully crafted book, “The Notebook” comes to life on stage in a way that will resonate deeply with audiences across North America.”
The show features music and lyrics by Ingrid Micahelson, and won a 2025 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, with book by Bekah Brunstetter, who received a 2024 Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
The story follows the lifelong romance of Allie and Noah, who come from different social worlds: she is wealthy, and he comes from a working-class family.
It is set during three different stages of their lives, with each time period portrayed by a different pair of actors. The story is framed around the older couple, as Noah reads stories from their shared past from a notebook to Allie, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
They meet one summer when they are both 17, and begin to fall in love, despite warnings from those close to them about the difference in their backgrounds. Noah tells her of his plans to fix up an abandoned house for her. He becomes upset when she doesn’t want to introduce him to her parents. However, when she does bring him home, her parents disapprove of him.
Ten years later, Noah, who has served in Vietnam, has come home to rehabilitate the house he promised to fix up for Allie.
Allie, meanwhile, has become engaged to a wealthy man. However, when she sees a newspaper article about Noah’s house restoration project, she secretly travels to see him.
When Allie asks Noah why he never wrote to her, she discovers he did, and learns that her mother withheld his letters from her.
While older Noah is reading the stressful parts of their relationship from his notebook, he has a stroke. While he recovers, he isn’t around to care for older Allie, and her medical condition worsens.
However, he eventually recovers enough to visit her, and she has a rare moment of lucidity and realizes the stories in the notebook are their love story.
