TAYLOR — Police are investigating the carjacking and attempted kidnapping of an 86-year-old woman about 12:30 p.m. last Sunday near Southland Center.   A man approached the woman as she attempted to get into her white 2008 Mercury Milan after shopping. Police said he struck her in the back of the head with a chrome pistol and told her to move over because she was going with him.   The woman tried to get out through the passenger door and struggled with the man before finally exiting the car and falling on the … [Read more...] about Police seeking carjacker

By TOM TIGANI Sunday Times Newspapers   SOUTHGATE — Officials in the Southgate Community School District are hoping to build on recent salary concessions made by teachers on the way to further cuts to avoid a budget deficit for the coming fiscal year.   Last month the United Teachers of Southgate union agreed to a 1 percent salary concession that Supt. David Peden said will save his 5,500-student district about $250,000.   “The teachers can sense that there is no money, not just in Southgate, but in all school … [Read more...] about Teachers’ concession first step toward reducing schools’ deficit

March 24, 2009 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

By Sue Suchyta   “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is offering its unique and macabre musical magic at the Fisher Theatre now through April 5. In the wake of the popular Johnny Depp movie, the touring company has taken several innovative steps to set themselves apart.   The production is introduced through the memory of a traumatized boy, whose tortured mind recalls the events to be retold. Furthermore, the staging puts the instruments in the hands of the actors on stage to viscerally impact the story’s … [Read more...] about ‘Sweeney Todd’ playing at the Fisher

Jill Jackson’s Hollywood March 22nd

March 24, 2009 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Jill Jackson   HOLLYWOOD ... Looking back at the Oscars, particularly the telecast — it has turned into a fashion show. On the red carpet, instead of the stars being asked what they think will happen, what will be awarded, etc., it’s “What are you wearing? Whose jewels are those?” AND if only something could be done to omit those boring “thank yous” from the winners. I’m told by Joan Fontaine and other statuette winners that in the old days it wasn’t like this. It was all about the role, the … [Read more...] about Jill Jackson’s Hollywood March 22nd

Couch Theater March 22nd

March 24, 2009 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

PICK OF THE WEEK   “Quantum of Solace” — Daniel Craig returns as superspy James Bond in this sequel to “Casino Royale.” The film picks up right after the events at the end of the previous movie, and we get a glimpse into 007’s past and a key to who he is as a man. The movie then kicks into gear concerning a plot to control the water rights of a Third World country. OK, not the most intriguing plot for a Bond flick, but they can’t all be about defusing nuclear bombs in underground lairs.   “Quantum” is a much darker and … [Read more...] about Couch Theater March 22nd
