The State of the State you should have heard
By MICHAEL D. LaFAIVE (The following is a State of the State Address that you should have heard, but didn’t.) As governor, I’ve decided to take a different approach and speak directly to the people, rather than Michigan’s state representatives and senators. I’m doing so because in recent years our Legislature hasn’t served the people of this state very well. Many observers believe that the policy directions state officials pursued are hollowing out the private sector to temporarily prop up a bloated, … [Read more...] about The State of the State you should have heard
Obama the Rhetorical Magician
THE RICH LOWRY COLUMN By Rich Lowry George H.W. Bush made a “read my lips” no-new-taxes pledge in his acceptance speech at the Republican Convention in August 1988, and broke it two years later. That seemed a fast turnaround, but President Barack Obama has outpaced him by making, and then signaling his intention to break, a no-new-taxes pledge all in the same address. “If your family earns less than $250,000 a year,” Obama said in his speech to Congress, “you will not see your taxes increased a single dime. This state has been mired in a recession all by itself for most of this decade, and the lack of a … [Read more...] about Keep students in school until age 18
