Fire-damaged Oakwood Food Center demolition to begin soon
By SUE SUCHYTA Sunday Times Newspapers MELVINDALE – Demolition will begin soon on the heavily fire-damaged Oakwood Food Center, following a settlement with the insurance company, City Attorney Larry Coogan said at the Dec. 26 City Council meeting. The store, 3600 Oakwood Blvd., was destroyed by fire the night of July 4, leaving residents of Coogan Towers, a high-rise housing unit for seniors and the disabled, without a nearby supermarket. Museum hosts Halloween events Oct. 26-27
DEARBORN – The Dearborn Historical Museum has transformed into a haunted house of sorts this Halloween season. On Oct 26, the museum welcomes children 12 and under for a good-fun Halloween Party at the McFadden-Ross House, 915 S. Brady St. The event is from 4 to 6 p.m., and admission is $2. DEARBORN — The Michigan Community College Athletic Association honored Henry Ford College volleyball players Victoria Konan and Katelyn Pinkowski recently. Pinkowski, a freshman middle-hitter for HFC, received All-Region, All-MCCAA post-season honors. She was also voted First Team All-Conference and was selected to the All-Freshman Team. HFC alumnus to play pro baseball in Australia
DEARBORN — Daniel Cameron, a 2015 Henry Ford College alumnus who played catcher for the college’s baseball team for two years, will continue his baseball career Down Under. Cameron, of Livonia, will play for the Carine Cats, a minor league team for the Perth Heat of the Australia Baseball League, which is affiliated with Major League Baseball in the United States. Man involved in crash with Heights police vehicle dies
By ZEINAB NAJM Times-Herald Newspapers HEIGHTS — The Wixom man involved in a Jan. 2 crash with a Dearborn Heights patrol vehicle in Allen Park died Jan. 8. Timothy Turner, 59, died from his injuries and complications as a result of the collision, Wayne County Medical Examiner Spokesman Lloyd Jackson said. DPS approves $201 million 2016-17 budget

This year’s budget has a $13 million increase from the $188 million budget in 2015-16. Multiple changes included in the budget are pupil counts, state aid, contractual commitments, healthcare, programs and 45 retirements.
