Former Fordson grid coach Charles Jestice, Dearborn sports legend, passes on
On Sept. 18, Charles Jestice passed away. The former varsity football head coach, was at the helm when the Tractors were so dominant throughout the state as a powerful grid machine that was highly respected at every level. Coach Jestice fielded teams in the 1970s and 1980s that were championship-plus while at Fordson High School. He had been retired for the past few years and had reached his 78th birthday. The Titans have enough seniors coming back to help make their team one to reckon with among the prep gridiron battles certain to take place within their circuit. Former high school varsity players from Dearborn and Downriver are part of the Wayne State University 2013 football team. Leading the list is Andrew Matt, a 6-2, 241-pound senior defensive end. He is from Wyandotte Roosevelt and is being counted on to help anchor a strong defense when the Warriors take the field this season. Matt already has earned three letters while at WSU and is expected to start at his position. John Powell is the new head coach of varsity football for the Pioneers. He takes over from long-time coach David Mifsud, who departed after last season.
