Part of series of six free concerts in September with DSO Community Series and Open House

DEARBORN — The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert at 8 p.m. next Tuesday at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. The performance is part of the Your DSO in Your Community free concert series.

Tickets are free but reservations are required. To reserve tickets, call the Ford Center box office at (313) 943-2354. Parking is free.

Selections will include: “Candide Overture” by Bernstein; “Buckaroo Holiday,” “Saturday Night Waltz” and “Hoe Down” from Copland’s “Rodeo;” “Circuits” by Cindy McTee; “Adiago for Strings” by Barber; “American Salute” by Gould; “Waltzing Cat,” “Syncopated Clock” and “Typewriter” by Anderson; “The Entertainer” by Joplin; “Carmen’s Hoedown,” arranged by Felix Slatkin; “Princess Leia’s Theme,” “Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)” and main title from “Star Wars;” and “Star Spangled Banner,” arranged by Mathes.

“In these difficult times, bringing music to a larger public is more important than ever,” DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin said. “The DSO is committed to expanding its audience and it is my hope that as we reach out to different constituencies, they in turn will come to visit us as well.”

“Leaving Orchestra Hall to go out into the community and play for those who might not know us as well as they would like to has always been one of Leonard’s chief missions.” said Anne Parsons, DSO president and CEO. “It’s exciting to see this first round of community concerts come to fruition and to be visiting people where they live and learn right at the start of our season. We’ll be looking forward to scheduling more concerts like these throughout 2009-2010, so please stay tuned for more announcements to come.”

Concert attendees will receive complimentary discount ticket vouchers, $10 for adults, $1 for those 18 and under that can be used to secure seats to any regular subscription DSO concert during the 2009-10 season. Vouchers can be redeemed by presenting them to the DSO box office 30 minutes prior to a concert. Adults with a $10 voucher will pay only $10 for the concert while anyone 18 and under may purchase a ticket for $1 when accompanied by a paying adult. There is a limit of two adult tickets and four children’s tickets per family.
