Charter amendments change council meeting times, frequency

LINCOLN PARK — Voters on Tuesday agreed with four of five city ballot proposals involving changes to the city charter.

Charter Amendment 1, which passed 2,882 to 999, changes City Council meetings from each Monday to the first and third Mondays of each month. Charter Amendment 2, which passed 3,281 to 604, moves the starting time of the meetings from 8 to 7:30 p.m.

“We’re actually joining the 21st century,” said Mayor Frank Vaslo of the move to two meetings a month. Vaslo, who won re-election Tuesday (see related story), was a proponent of the proposed charter changes on Tuesday’s ballot.

Charter Amendment 3, which passed 1,981 o 1,711, removes the requirement that the council adopt rules of procedure in May.

Charter Amendment 4 passed 3,290 to 607 and requires members to register votes by saying “yes” or “no” rather than “yea” or “nay.”

Charter Amendment 5 would have changed the due date for the third city tax installment from Feb. 28 to Feb. 15 each year to match Wayne County’s deadline. It failed 2,343 to 1,527.
