Federal officials, Lions players help school celebrate breakfast week

March 6, 2010 By Times-Herald Newspapers Leave a Comment

LINCOLN PARK — Lafayette Elementary School, 1360 Lafayette Blvd., and the Michigan Department of Education will welcome federal agency representatives and Detroit Lions players Wednesday to celebrate National School Breakfast Week.

Audrey Rowe of the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be joined by All-Pro kicker Jason Hanson and retired All-Pro lineman Lion Luther Elliss from  8:15 to 9:40 a.m. as students eating breakfast in their classrooms to advocate the importance of eating a healthy breakfast every day. Doing so helps improve academic performance, USDA and state school officials say.

Plans call for a “fun and informative” school assembly in the school cafeteria after breakfast that includes the dignitaries and will feature student performances.

Lincoln Park Public Schools is a recent Gold Award winner in the Michigan School Breakfast Challenge. The school district increased student participation in its school breakfast program by what officials call an “amazing” 105 percent.
