DEARBORN — Acting Fire Chief Dean Creech last week announced he is retiring, internal city sources told the Times-Herald shortly before press time.

Creech reportedly made the announcement at a meeting of city department heads and said his resignation would be effective June, the source said. Creech was no longer in his office when a reporter called and could not be located for comment prior to press time.

Calls to the city’s Department of Public Information and Mayor John O’Reilly Jr. seeking comment were not returned immediately on Friday.

According to city records, Creech has been with the department since March 1989. He has been acting chief since July 2009 after the retirement of his predecessor, Nazih Hazime, the last appointed chief. The department has a budget of roughly $17.5 million for the current fiscal year.
